Every day, more than 1,100 young people acquire HIV, and AIDS remains the second leading cause of death among young people worldwide. We are committed to driving down HIV cases and ensuring that the next generation has access to sexual and reproductive health services tailored to their needs.

To make this a reality, we are investing in innovative technologies and youth-friendly initiatives that provide care and treatment in ways that are accessible, stigma-free, and empowering.

Bridging Gaps in Care with Tiko

One of the initiatives we support is Tiko, a groundbreaking digital health platform transforming healthcare for young people across Kenya, Uganda and South Africa.

Tiko connects young people – especially young women – to free sexual, reproductive, HIV and mental health services via their mobile phones, at no cost. On a device that is easy and familiar to them, it lets them book confidential appointments; receive SMS reminders; choose and rate local providers, and even earn reward points to spend at local retailers. Tiko gives its users a choice and a voice, it helps build community, and it incentivizes young people to prioritize self-care.

Through our partnership, we have ensured that young people have the freedom to choose between public and private healthcare, at no extra cost, ensuring access to high-quality care for those who need it most.

Our Impact Through Tiko

With the support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Tiko has:

  • Reached over 322,000 young people with essential health services
  • Distributed 82,000 HIV tests to young people
  • Initiated 91,200 young people on HIV prevention medication (PrEP)
  • Provided 25,000 young people with mental health services

By meeting young people where they are—digitally and in their communities—we are helping to reshape the future of HIV prevention and care. But devastating international funding cuts are putting programs like this at risk. In Kenya and Uganda, many of Tiko’s community based partners are under threat including drop-in clinics and a program that helps 23,000 young girls access HIV prevention, leaving their health and futures in jeopardy.

Through our Rocket Response Fund, we’re committed to doing what we can to restore these lifesaving services. Every contribution makes a difference. Please give today if you can.
